Rabbit Creek Sept
24th 1855
Dear Sir
Yours of the 20th has just this moment come to hand -- I was prepared to hear that the [illegible] would do just about as they have--for I had made up my mind very much against my will that they
are a lot of damned rascals -- beautiful specimens of San Francisco officials -- I was hardly prepared to hear that they were in want of Woods Deposition -- As the love they have expressed for him
to me has never been of the most endearing sort -- The finest prefixes to the word scoundrel I have heard used [illegible crossed out] by them of him without stint -- I am willing that Wood shall
testify for them all he can -- You can prove by Wood the time that I first went to the Ranch the 10th of Sept 1853 -- That he agreed to pay me for the consideration of my services and the
services of my wife $150 -- one hundred & fifty dollars pr month -- that he allowed & paid me that for the time I worked while he was interested -- that when the settlement was made Monroe & Rice
were present -- that Monroe drew on Milpers Sanders & Markham
[written along left margin of page: My health is most miserable Worse than when I left Martinez Accept my thanks for news items Also for [illegible] tickets with names of
Co officers etc.]
