Said

only
remaining
part
of
Moraga's
Rancho
past
,
located
on a
hill
above
Moraga
Valley
.
Construction
began
in
1841
;
originally
3
rooms
.
Made
of
bricks
to
form
36
"
width
exterior
walls
.
Redwood
cut
from
Moraga
Redwoods
was
used
for
beams
and the
plank
ceiling
. The
building
was
expanded
over
the
years
. The
Moraga
family
hosted
a "
fandango
" in the
house
on
New
Year's
Eve
1854
.
Ownership
of the
building
changed
hands
beginning
in
1885
when
Horace
W
.
Carpentier
, an
opportunist
and
speculator
who
was to
become
the
most
infamous
character
in the
history
of
Moraga
,
took
possession
of
most
of the
Moraga
Rancho
. In
1912
,
James
Irvine
,
owner
and
founder
of the
Moraga
Company
purchased
the
property
and
it
was
used
as a
dairy
. The
County
condemned
any
use
of the
building
for
even
daily
production
in
1929
.
